'Membrane II, III, IV and V' Sian Hughes

Return to Unus Multorum 2020

Silk and liquid latex have been used to pick up details and fragments of brick, stone, plaster, mortar, sand and charcoal in an exposed wall of Plas Bodfa. Reminiscent of geological strata, the ambient light reveals the suspended materials in the fragile membrane of silk and latex.

Over the past several weeks, the latex has been layered on onto the silk which was hung like wallpaper on the exposed wall. The lengths were peeled off and hung in front of the stained glass window in the stairway at Plas Bodfa.

This work is a part of Unus Multorum, an exhibition that was meant to have opened in April, 2020 with projects and installations from 111 creative people. Transformed by the global pandemic, it has evolved into a time-less project, gently unfolding over the course of the year inside the house and in the digital realm. Sian Hughes tells the story behind her set of artist multiples. These works were included in the Unus Multorum exhibition and are a part of Plas Bodfa Objects, a collection of artist multiples. The works are latex impressions from a wall in Plas Bodfa, an empty manor house on Anglesey in Wales. She pressed a thin sheet of porcelain clay into the wall, fired it, then used it as a cast, brushing on several layers of liquid latex to create fragile memories of the house. https://sianhughes.net/ https://www.plasbodfa.com/unus-multorum-2020
